MARIOTTO RESIDENCE

13 Wood St, San Francisco, CA

Intertwined

PROGRAM

The program is to redesign a 3 storey apartment buildings located at 13 Wood St, San Francisco, CA. The 1st floor is going to be rented as affordable housing. The 2nd floor will be occupied by a single father with twins where one of the twins has a disability. The 3rd floor will be occupied by the owner, the Mariotto family, a single mother with one daughter and her grandfather who is visually impaired.

CONCEPT

The concept for this project is intertwined. Intertwined means to be connected with each other or live closely with each other. It's inspired by the client profile by how each of the individual needs helps each other to do their task. I used various elements of design incorporating texture, rhythm, color, material, shape, form, and pattern in my concept. The concept will be expressed differently. The 1st floor is intertwining vines and branches, the 2nd-floor concept is intertwining redwood tree roots and the 3rd-floor concept is a wreath.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

The 1st floor is designed for low-income family housing so sustainable features are used in the design to help the tenant cut down on bills. Natural light plays an important role in the design execution. Flexibility is also important. Decorative partition is used to express the concept of intertwining and to make it a semi-private area.  The concept for 1st floor is intertwining vines and branches. It is inspired by how branches cannot bear fruit unless it abides in its vines. The way vines help the branches to bear its fruit reminds me that the low-income family would not be able to live comfortably if Maria did not rent her space as low-income housing.

The 2nd floor  is designed for a single father with twin daughters. One of the twins has a cerebral palsy so the design features in the house need to be A.D.A compliant. Floor finishes also need to be seamless and avoid using materials that make it hard for a wheelchair user to move around the space. The concept for the 2nd-floor is intertwined redwood trees roots. Redwood trees roots intertwined their roots together so that they are able to grow high because the roots support each other. This concept is related to the twins who has cerebral palsy and need support not just from people around her but also the design support to accommodate her daily needs.

The 3rd floor is designed for a single mother with daughter and her father. Her daughter is sensitive to VOC product and her father has eyesight problem and has a problem with kneeling and stooping. The design needs to be low VOC and non-obstructive pathways. The concept for the 3rd floor is intertwined wreath. The wreath has a meaning of protection, unity, balance, and memorial. The circle shape means eternity. So the concept means that Maria, as the head of the family needs to protect her family and the low-income family as well as having a balance between her personal and work-life.
